Overview and Visioning of Forum’s Work in the Context of Changing Water Sector Discourse

Forum for Policy Dialogue on Water Conflicts in India (Forum to be brief) organised a two-day National Workshop on ‘Overview and Visioning of Forum’s Work in the Context of Changing Water Sector Discourse’ in Pune on 26-27 March 2012.

Dr. Baba Adhav from the Maharashtra Rajya Dharan va Prakalp Grasta Shetkari Parishad, Pune inaugurated the workshop and released the research outputs by the Forum.

On the first day the main highlights were the two substantial sessions on the “Direction of Water Sector in the 12th Five Year Plan” and “Draft National Water Policy, 2012”. Dr. Mihir Shah, Member planning Commission chaired the first session. This was followed by presentations by the Chair Persons/members of some of the Working Groups/ Sub Groups of 12th Plan. Prof. A. Vaidyanathan. Dr. Nirmal Sengupta, Prof. Tushaar Shah, M. V. Ramachandrudu, Himanshu Thakkar, Ravi Narayanan, Dr. Himanshu Kulkarni, Prof. Ramaswamy Iyer, Prof. Philippe Cullet, Prof. Subodh Wagle made presentations in this session.

Shri S. C. Jain, member of the drafting group that drafted the National Water Policy made the main presentation in the session on the draft National Water Policy. Prof. Jayanta Bandyopadhyay and Prof. Ramaswamy Iyer then spoke on the draft National Water Policy.

The workshop received a positive feedback and many eminent scholars from the water sector participated in the workshop,  Rohini Nilekani, Dr. Achyut Das, Dr. Bharat Patankar, Dr. Biksham Gujja, Dr. Dinesh K. Mishra, Prof. Vijay Paranjape, Prof. S. Janakarajan to name a few.

The Forum completed the second phase of its work in March 2012 and a fresh phase has begun immediately after that. This workshop was an important opportunity to re-connect with the larger body of the Forum (meaning members and all those who have been connected with Forum’s work in one way or the other) to review the work done so far, get a fresh mandate for its future work and programmatic thrust, get input and suggestions on a draft vision-mission document of the Forum and streamline its decision making processes.
